Abstract

Europe has become over the last years the new promised land for Latin Americans, Africans and Asians. This has changed the immigration phenomenon direction, which historically has brought Europeans to the other continents. In the public opinion of many European countries one can see an increasing perception of the image of the immigrant as an invader and a barbarian. In this new reality, the foreigners arriving now – specially from the so-called Third Word – experience the difficult task of riding out the loss of the homeland, creating new tie-ups, and living the new dynamics of integration. Different responses to this process have exposed the plurality of visions held by the migrants on their new land and their relations with the host societies. In this context, we sought to understand, starting from the narrative of a Brazilian woman living in Italy, the daily misadventures lived in a hybrid process of identity rebuilding and the immigrants integrations strategies experienced by people who have decided to live permanently in the new land: the recognition cross the alterity.
