Abstract

The article is a comparative analysis of three travel narratives in the Brazilian countryside. All of them are done by car or truck, by Claude Lévi-Strauss, Albert Camus and the Salesian’s missionary Cesare Albisetti, between 1929 and 1949. The study emphasizes the relationship between the means of transportation and their drivers and the perception of the landscape and the tropical nature. The three travel stories give us some ideas to think about a specific moment in the Brazilian History characterized by a strong politic and cultural debate about the modernity and his connection with ancestral roots of the nation.
