Abstract

This article analyzes the ideological and pedagogical factors that led to the establishment of the núcleos escolares campesinos or clustered schools for peasants in Peru. These schools were established by Peruvian authorities with financial and technical collaboration from the US government in the context of the Second World War and the early Cold War. Among the economic and social trends that characterized Peru during this period were emphasis on export-oriented growth, urbanization, commercialization of the rural economy, and increasing rural tensions. The ideologies that influenced the establishment of the núcleos were Indigenismo, contemporary pedagogical thought, action anthropology, and Desarrollismo. Peasant communities embraced the núcleos both as vehicles of social mobility and means to escape the demands of local bosses.
