Inclusive and Non-Sexist Language
The journal Myrtia actively promotes the use of inclusive and non-sexist language in all its articles, with the aim of fostering gender equality in Science, in line with the principles established by the European Research Area (ERA) agenda for the period 2022-2024, specifically in its action no. 5: "Promote gender equality and foster inclusion."
The journal recommends that authors use non-sexist language in the texts submitted for publication. Recognizing that not all texts can easily adapt to certain formulas of egalitarian language, we believe, as stated in the Guide for Non-Sexist Language (UAM, 2019), that the language has sufficient resources and tools to communicate inclusively. This allows authors to choose the appropriate forms to convey their messages in a way that contributes to positive change. As mentioned in the guide, "the person producing the message can choose between different forms to express themselves in an inclusive and non-sexist manner, so that the language becomes an instrument for change" (p. 9).
For more information on best practices in inclusive writing, we recommend consulting the APA's Bias-Free Language Guidelines.
In our journal, we are convinced that a conscious effort in writing articles can have a significant impact on society. Scientific communication cannot remain apart from the changes occurring in the society that supports it.
