Abstract

Sophocles chooses a difficult subject, when he decides to defend in his tragedy a hero who is guilty of betrayal. The result, however, is faultless. Thus, even though Ajax is responsible for that offence, Sophocles, thanks, mainly, to his masterly handling of the rhetoric in the accusation and defence of the hero against this offence, gets to make prevail the brave soldier of the Trojan war, second only to Achiles, over the betrayer.
