Abstract

This paper studies, firstly, the difficulties that raise from the two traditional attitudes of the critics towards the tribute to Neron, both the irony and the sincerity; secondly, the article analyses the praise to the emperor within its own political and cultural reality, that is to say, the Rome of Neron. Under this perspective, the analysis reveals, finally, that the eulogy to Neron in the Pharsalia must be understood as an obligatory flattering letter, essential for Lucan to publish his work.
