PRODICUS: DEIFYING USEFULNESS

Authors

Abstract

Pródicus probably distinguished two stages in the development of religion: the phase of divinizing anything beneficial and the phase of divinizing the discoverers of beneficial inventions would be proclaimed divine. The primary innovation of the theory lies in the motive for an introduction of divinities, namely appreciation: what is appreciated can be divinized whether part of nature or something invented by men.
