Abstract

The presence of Circe in the history of opera has been a constant, and the librettos perfectly illustrate the multifaceted dimension that the daughter of the Sun has acquired since ancient times in her characterization as a woman. Baroque librettists draw upon tradition and adapt her identity in light of the events of the time. This study aims to analyze the libretto of the opera Circe by C. Ivanovich, establishing parallels with classical sources in order to highlight how the librettist revisits mythological episodes in which the sorceress acts as the protagonist to frame the creation and recreation of this singular character.
