Abstract

This paper detects both a lexical and conceptual debt toward Hesiod for Aristophanes’ invocation of the Muse in Pax 774-780. Aristophanes aims to represent himself as ‘the poet of the peace’ and for that purpose he recalls the tradition that stems from Hesiod and involves Stesichorus. After analyzing the invocations of the Muses in Aristophanes and the  relation of this passage with both Stesichorus and Hesiod’s texts, it is proposed a commentary for these lines. The invocation can be conceived as a further step toward the definition of the genre with which the Muse Thalia will be paired lately.
