Abstract

These chapters are a satire of the stages of the 'sacrificium' made according to the Roman orthodoxy. The text that deals wiht 'ablutio' ('Sat.' 135, 2) must be placed between the setting of the altar ('Sat.' 135, 3) and the imposition of the 'pallium' ('Sat.' 135, 4). The 'anser omnibus matronis acceptissimus' may allude to 'Anser', a poet in Ovid's time who appears in 'Tr.', II 435 exceeding Cinna by impudence.
