Abstract

The author aims at checking the several meanings of the word ὕσπληγξ starting with the most unusual one, found at a funeral inscription from Aphrodisias in Caria ('CIG' 2824). Here, ὕσπληγξ names the enclosing-wall of a tomb-chamber, but this sense does not completely agree with the ones shown by different sources. A review of every quotation from inscriptions, literary authors and atticist lexica is made. The author concludes that the peculiar meaning of ὕσπληγξ at Aphrodisias in Caria is due to the use of a popular standard or 'Volkssprache', provided by the characteristic specialization of a technical context.
