Abstract

The present paper studies various traditional and folk tales - corresponding to the types AT 1510, AT 1350 and AT 1352* - related to the story of the widow of Ephesus narrated by Petronius in the Satyricon. The examination of the different examples enables certain commonly accepted arguments on the history of the subject to be refuted. On the other hand, the existence of a common scheme, present in the different variants from these tales, throws light on the function of the narrative elements in Petronius' story.
