Abstract

Given the scant reference to the sea in "sea" passages in the first 11 Metamorphoses books, our aim in this paper is to show the relevance these references to the sea have when they do appear in the text. These Ovidian sea references can be divided into three groups: (i) elements/strength of Nature (Deluge, Phaethon, Perseus...); (ii) abode or home of minor or major divinities (from Triton to Neptune); and (iii) sea route sailed (Ages, Minos), in which the Ceix passage (where the sea is the central element) is particularly important.
