Abstract

Sappho’s plea to Hera in the ‘Brothers Poem’ is the starting point for a revision of mythical episodes of the goddess related to storms and other atmospheric phenomena. The consideration of similar passages and archaeological evidence point to Hera having a special relationship with sailing. The reasons for her involvement in these situations reveal her double role as goddess of marriage and of sovereignity. This background broadens our understanding of Sappho’s plea and enables a more detailed treatment of her cult and mythological character.
