Abstract

Clarín’s knowledge of classical authors is wide and profound, as shown by his critiques and by his novels and short stories. On these grounds, this paper is aimed at the analysis of the value of classical references in the short story entitled Cuervo, especially as regards the treatment of the aphorism carpe diem. The combination of several Horatian poems and a special adaptation of the Milesian tale the “Widow of Ephesus” from Satyricon provides a sound basis for the present analysis.
