Abstract

A plausible interpretation of Epictetus’ Discourses entails their reading in the light of two central arguments around which the author’s reflection are organized, namely the Teleological Argument and the Eudaimonist Argument. In this paper, I suggest that even if the tension between the conclusions of both arguments may not be solved from a theoretical perspective, the understanding of Epictetus’ viewpoint on Rhetoric may help understand the author’s preference for one of the poles over the other.
