Abstract

This work intends to show how Juan Gelman’s collection of poems Valer la pena reuses classical tradition in two different ways: (i) by including characters from Classical Antiquity in order to identify past and present and thus achieve temporal and sentimental distance from his own personal experience of exile, uprooting and suffering for the murder of his beloved ones and (ii) by using a group of lines by Catullus in order to create a new love poetry which likewise allows him to alleviate his pain and sorrow.
