Abstract

The story of king Rhampsinitus and the thief, narrated by Herodotus, corresponds to a popular tale known the world over. Scholars have assumed that Herodotus abbreviated the oral story. However, the reconstruction usually offered of the type to which the different popular and traditional versions correspond is, in our opinion, unsatisfactory. This first study deals with the structural relationships the story has to other similar tales.
