Abstract

Herodian’s Histories arranges their contents under two concepts, ὕβρις and σωφροσύνη. With these the historian portraits the isolated figures of the emperors under a moral system that seems to be of popular origin. This explains the important role that plays the concept of τύχη, which looks like the stoic’s διάνοια. The three concepts make possible to suggest a “Weltanschauung” that have its origins in the middle class of the historical period.
