METODOLOGÍA PARA EL ESTUDIO DEL RETABLO BARROCO

Abstract

The importance of the Spanish Baroque Altarpiece has shown the variety of solutions adopted to transmit a visual message contained in the images. The diffeent way in which the theme is treated, the richness of the methods of expression used, the growing importance given to the centralpoint of the Christian sanctuary has permitted the inclusion of elements that not only belong to the exclusive field of the joiners, altar-piece makers and sculptors, but also common to the other cultural areas of the baroque world: scenography, rhetoric, eucharistic exaltation, inventive stereotypical solutions, much of these expressed in the use of the classical orders. This paper is designed there fore to indicate some of the basic methodological guidelines,for further study and to highlight the growing function of the baroque altarpiece as a liturgical element of great importance.
