Abstract

This is an analysis of some theoretical speculations developed by the historian of Art Wilhelm Worringer in his famous essay Abstraktion und Einfühlung (1908) in which this author presents a psychology of styles based on the integration or the sum of the concepts of empathy or Einfühlung and of abstraction. It is outstanding his thought about which the nature of the tendency towards abstraction in Art is, from prehistoric, Egyptian, Bizantyne, Medieval to XXth century art associated or joined to the different «types» of humanity that he describes. It is also worth mentioning the connection between Worringer and the theorist Konrad Fiedler, the sculptor and theorist Adolf Hildebrand, the German Expressionism and the painting theory by W. Kandinsky.
