Abstract

A main subject for scholars interested in Francisco Salzillo has always been the search for the sculptor's iconographical sources, and particularly for models and relations concerning the Oración del huerto. We notice important resemblances between the angel of chis group and the image of Icarus in a painting imputed to Jan van Boeckhorst at Schleissheim Castle, in Munich. It is quite possible that Salzillo took into account a picture of that painting when he conceived the angel.
