DE MEMORIALES ARTÍSTICOS ZARAGOZANOS (II): UN ALEGATO SOBRE LA ESCULTURA (ca. 1677) Y SUS DEUDAS CON LOS DISCURSOS DE JUSEPE MARTÍNEZ
Abstract
A commentaty on the memorial de los escultores zaragozanos one of the first texts written in order to defend the nohility of their art. The author explores the affinities of sculpture with painting (ut pictura sculptura). He justifies them as Pacheco did with logical and metaphysical arguments by stating that sculpture is a superior artistic genre to painting. This concept in the memorial de los escultores zaragozanos can be related to Zucccari's theoretical drawings and to Jusepe Martinez who considered the greatest painting a drawing (or composition in black and white) correctly thought out and executed. In this way, the intellectual character of sculpture is emphasized, though admitting the supremacy of the painting. All of these facts in our study of fhe text relate it to the zaragozan artists and above all to the Discursos by Martinez where we find similar artistic and historical information abouf Aragonese artists.Downloads
