CONFIGURING THE REGION OF MURCIA FOR FRUITS AND VEGETABLES: PRODUCTIVE RATIONALISATION, WAGE AGRICULTURE AND NEW SOCIAL STRUCTURE OF THE DAY- LABOUR WORK
Abstract
In the Region of Murcia, an innovating node of production of fresh fruits and vegetables for exporting has been developed during the last decades. In this paper we analyse the rationalisation strategies that have been displayed inside this productive system in search of a precise, predictable and efficient production. In order to do so, a whole set of innovations for product de-seasonality, time integration, differentiation and quality, etc. have been started. Later on, we will study local labour markets, attending to the experimental changes happened while consolidating rationalisation. Finally, all these elements are put into order within a specific social configuration, in which a new social composition of labour is defined (women and immigrants), explaining the scope of productive rationalisation related to the possibilities of management of the labour uncertainties.
