Abstract

The velocity of the mask induction at 3 X MAC and recovery of anaesthesia with halothane and sevoflurane were compared in healthy cats premedicated with a mixture of acepromazine (0.1mg/kg) and pethidine (7mg/kg). The cats were maintained under anaesthesia at 1.2 X MAC for 20 minutes to record different cardiopulmonary parameters. The time of induction was clinically shorter in those animals anesthetised with sevoflurane. The time when the palpebral reflex was lost resulted statistically significant. The heart rate decreased during the maintenance but the value of the systolic arterial pressure remained stable in both groups. The respiratory rate was higher in those animals anesthetised with halothane showing statistical diferences at minutes 5 and 10. The ETCO2 was lower in the halothane group being significant at minute 10. The values of SpO2 and rectal temperature were similar for both groups. The cats receiving sevoflurane had a clinically faster recuperation than the others but no significant differences were observed in the measured recovery times.
