Abstract

By listening to Mallarmé Gide conceives the project to draft a treaty that would expose the theory of the symbol; Le Traité du Narcisse (1892). Published in 1893, Le Voyage d ́Urien is the romantic illustration of the principles outlined in the note of the Treaty. Gide sees the book as a “symbolic” novel; it is indeed an imaginary adventure, a dream that allows the hero to escape from the reality. However, it is also a work in which Gide begin already a revolt that will lead our author to an other “me.” Gide explore the possibility to adopt another ethic, based this time on the acceptance of the demands of nature. The characters of Le Voyage express now their desire of adventures. The depicted landscapes, become a source of carnal and sensual images. To better understand the motivations and mechanisms of its literary creation we will go back as far as possible in childhood and remember certain peculiarities of the young Gide, related to sexuality.
