Abstract

This article analyses the use of repetition in La cantatrice chauve, which challenges the principle of difference as a precondition of meaning as stated by linguists and semiologists. Following the work of Michael Issacharoff we show this challenge to be particularly significant in three sections of the play: (1) the initial didascalia; (2) the anecdote relating to the name Bobby Watson, and (3) the poem “Le Feu”, recited by Mary. In all these cases, the mechanisms of repetition convey the idea that reality is deprived of any specific meaning when it is not subject to instruments of linguistic differentiation.
