EUROPEAN TRENDS IN INDEXING BY SUBJECT OF NARRATIVE FICTION
Abstract
Indexing is an old practice and a complex job, particularly in the process of determining the subject (aboutness). Regarding indexing of fictional Literature, the question becomes more difficult, due to the subjectivity and the multidimensionality of the literary work. Traditionally, Literature is not indexed, and classificatory systems address it by form. Over the last few years, instruments of subject indexing of fictional narratives have emerged that show that this is possible and necessary. In this context, we seek to know how the main European services and information systems behave, in terms of the subject indexing of fictional narrative. For this, an exploratory case study is carried out. The results allow us to conclude that most of the countries do not index the fictional narrative by subject and those that actually do it are located in northern Europe. Therefore, we need more studies and instruments for this practice to spread.
