Abstract

An analysis of the books LIX and LX of Cassius Dio’ Roman history reveals that their narrative is developed by means of a characterization of the emperors that emanated from Mecenas’ speech (Book LII). This development improves the narrative continuity between the emperors and makes the annalistic divisions a mere ornamental resource.
