Abstract

The author of the paper publishes and studies three new funerary inscriptions of the Hellenistic age found in the Western Necropolis of Aptera (Crete) by the Greek archaeologist V. Niniou- Kindeli. The text of the inscriptions reads: Inscr. 1, A) ̣ Ἰ κ ̣ ̣ αρ̣ [ - -] | Κοσίλ[λω], in L. 1 perhaps ̣Ι̣κ̣ α̣ρ̣ [ ος]. B) Νέων | Κοσίλ[λω]; Inscr. 2, Νικ̣α [- - -] | Διογ[νήτω ?]; Inscr. 3, [- - -] | [- - -]δα. The first inscription presents the names of two deceased brothers who are sons of Kosillos. The name Κόσιλλος appears in Crete, apart from this inscription, in Elyros in West Crete in the 2nd century BC. Out of Crete this name has not been found elsewhere. The final two letters of the father's name have survived in the second line of the third inscription. It is probably a personal name with a suffix in -δας, whose use is common in Crete.
