Abstract

Scholars have analyzed the many intertextual crossings between the fable and the Aristophanic comedy; however, the fable has had a deeper incidence on the work of Aristophanes that is not limited to the mere relationship of intertextuality, but has operated as a model, along with other genres, in the construction of the Aristophanic couple. This paper tries to demonstrate the existence of a comic couple in the fable, composed of two opposite and antagonistic characters, the mocker and the mocked, that influences the Aristophanic couple. The early comedy uses this scheme to build their main couple: a comic hero, the spokesman of the positive speech, which mocks and defeats his antagonist.
