Abstract

This paper analyzes, by means of comparison, the different ways two probably contemporary authors, Macrobius and Fulgentius, tackled Virgil’s Aeneid. It posits that both of them utilize Virgil as a point of departure from where they can elaborate their own ideals about wisdom –and hence, about virtue, moral values and the relationship a wise man should establish with his past. Both authors do this by means of different interpretations and by means of a certain exposition technique in their respective works. Starting from the same point, they arrive to practically irreconcilable visions.
