Resumen

Virgil’s comparison of the Italian water goddess Juturna to a swallow (Aen. 12.473-7) is one of the more memorable similes from his epic. A close reading of the simile in light of material preserved in Plutarch’s Symposiaca or Table-Talk reveals a wealth of details that permit a more nuanced, richer understanding of the rationale for Virgil’s comparison, especially with regard to the fate of the Trojan exiles in Latium.
