The Diversification of Women’s Generations in Spain in the 20th and 21st Centuries
Abstract
This research aims to examine the growth and diversification of female generations in Spain by origin during the 20th and 21st centuries at the provincial level. We aim to establish comparative territorial patters among women of different origins and explore intra- and intergenerational diversification between migrants and natives. We utilize data from the Population and Housing Censuses (1930-2021), focusing on 10-year cohorts born between 1926 and 2005, affected by internal migrations in the 20th century and two migration booms in the 21st century. Results indicate that internal migration in the 20th century and international migration in the 21st century have altered the number and profile of female generations in Spain. However, provincial-level diversification in volume and migratory impact suggests that these complex regional patterns transcend the migrant-immigrant dichotomy. Additionally, differences in educational attainment, marital status, and occupation between native and immigrant women provide insights into how migrations contributions to intragenerational diversification in the social reproduction of generations.
