AMONG THE SELF-REGULATING MARKET AND LONG WAVES: A READING OF THE SOCIO-ECONOMIC CRISIS
Abstract
We propose, first, to establish a constructive dialogue based on the work of Karl Polanyi and his analysis of the market economy. Second, we try to characterize the capitalist crisis from the perspective of its historical development, following the outline of the theory of long waves, developed in the past by Ernest Mandel. This model introduces multiple factors that relate social, political and economic dimensions. Based on the strength of these pillars, we will include critical elements in the light of empirical phenomena tested in the crisis which we live nowadays -financialization, emerging countries, ultra-imperialism, etc.- and new fundamental theoretical contributions to analyse its course.
