OTHERNESS OF THE PAST, INDICIPLINE OF THE PRESENT. KARL POLANYI, OTTO BRUNNER AND THE USES OF OLD EUROPE
Abstract
How could the research historical work of two citizens of the former Austro-Hungarian Empire help us think about possible solutions for the current European crisis? This article revisits and updates the Karl Polanyi’s and Otto Brunner’s project. They affirmed the radical otherness of the Old Europe in an attempt to destabilize the universalist claims, inherent to the fossilized categories of political economy. We are still nowadays caught by such categories, curtailing an alternative way of thinking.
