THE REORGANISATION OF THE VALENCIAN IRRIGATION CANAS IN THE 19TH CENTURY: THE LIBERAL ORDINANCES AND THE VALENCIAN PROVINCE (1835-1850)
Abstract
The new liberal regime establishment implied a reform of the valencian irrigation systems' organization. The traditional irrigation systems mostly began from medieval models, managed by the peasants communities, that kept up the rights of communal use. The liberal reforms imposed an organizative homogenization, beginning from the imposition of a management model controlled by the landowners under the government authorities vigilance. The landowners, and specially the big ones, were the main beneficiaries of the new ordinances, monopolising the property and management of the water.
