THE HYDRAULIC TENSIONS AND DISPUTES IN THE VALENCIAN COUNTRY BETWEEN THE CENTURIES XIII AND XVIII
Abstract
It's not easy to measure the hydraulic tensions and disputes in the whole of the rural antagonisms. The arguments for the water create disputes, but the multiplication of irrigation channels it also contributed to calm down another leind of tensions. The huge rise of irrigated land, verified in the more dynamic regions of the Valencian country, forms the central element of its economic development. The most simple logic will make you think in a hydraulic tension more intense each time, result of a rising disequilibrium between the limited availability of water and a higher water demand. However, it's not verified the predictable parallelism between the watery balance more tighter each time and intensity and frequency of the disputes of water. That is explained because a whole series of characteristics (such as excessive length of volume in the medieval irrigation channels or the realization of expensive investments during the Ancient Regimen, interesting adaptations of the hydraulic management (specific roles for dry season, water selling, decrees of irrigation more and more thorough, etc.) or the growing entity of the state (judging of conflicts, controls to optimize the hydraulic means, etc.) contributed to minimize it, holding it inside the bearable margins for the several implied peasant communities.
