THE DRAINAGE AND THE AGRICULTURAL GROWTH IN THE MEDITERRANEAN SPAIN (1500-1800)
Abstract
Due to orografical, geological and climatic reasons do exist many island and coastal wetlands in the south-east comer of the Spanish peninsule. Their explotation fits the model of human land occupation imposed from the time of the Reconquista. Howevar, when the demographic pression and the risk for paludism grow, from the XVIIIth century on, begins a process of drainage and cultivation of reclaimed lands which will drastically reduce tl1eir previous area.
