"FLEXIBLE" NETWORKS ANO "RIGID" NETWORKS: URBANIZATION PRODUCTION AND TRANSPORT IN COASTAL GALICIA
Abstract
This paper focuses on some questions about urbanization and territory. Its the result of a research that has been developed by historians, sociologists and anthropologists. We have found very useful a triad of notions -production, reproduction and distribution- and a fourth one -network- just for analyzing the way people meet their basic needs, that's to say, for understanding the logics of social agency. I will pose those questions on the basis of a case study. In 1998, January the 13th, the "Discoverer Enterprise", an oil drilling rig that was being built in the dockyards "Astano", casted off and finally crashed against "As Pías" bridge, cutting off the main entry to the town of Ferrol. The collapse of the local road network engendered some problems on production, reproduction and consumption. It emphasized more general insufficiencies in communications, and the contradictions underlying organization of territory and regional urban development.
