WOMEN AND FLOWERS: LABOUR FLEXIBILITY IN PROGRESS. COLOMBIAN FLOWER-GROWER WOMEN'S WORK
Abstract
Colombia, as all other Latin-American countries, is implementing a structural adjustment program which is intended to liberalize the country's economy within the neoliberal globalization framework. In this context we find the cut flower sector, which in less than 25 years has become one of the leading non traditional export sectors of the country. Since the sector is targeted towards the international market, it is highly influenced by international standards, quality, efficiency and competitiveness measures, with important effects on the working conditions of male and female flower workers. With this article we try to respond this question: How has the globalization process affected the working conditions of the labourers most of whom are not qualified women?
