HORTICULTORS: A CHANGING IDENTITY (1988)
Abstract
This paper was developed from a wide research carried on 1988, sponsored by the extinct Agrarian Reform Institute (IRA). It meant to enlighten the professionalising processes of an agriculture forced to modernise and re-modernise because of its integration in Europe. Being focused on the Spanish Mediterranean horticultors, the research takes place right on the moment of the old country identity change by means of integrating their farms in a new business regime. This paper traces the clues of the social development by which land workers are no longer mere peasants to become producers business people, who intend to be recognised as such by society as a whole, and who also are, paradoxically, starring Europe's Unity
