Health, envioronment and biological well-being
Abstract
The present article analyzes conscripts’ stature from Cartagena in the second half of the XIXth century aiming to explore the relationships between biological well-being and environment. Conscripts’ stature was affected by economic and demographic issues together with environmental conditions. The impact of children’s labour, diseases and breathedin areas were relevant in stature evolution, showing very low standards of living up to the end of this century. Results also suggest that stature is a proper proxy to measure social disparity and inequality in varying ecological settings.Downloads
