Abstract

Education is one of the most demanding tasks humankind will have to face in the next millennium, since it constitutes one of the most powerful means with which to fight inequality. The European Union must organise inter-regional co-operation and global solidarity with a view to establish a cultural dialogue with a universal, democratic and tolerant perspective. Multiculturality, understood as a respectful and egalitarian contact between difFerent cultures, is becoming increasingly widespread and this leads on to a profound re-thinking of the instítution of the school, particularly within the context of the Reform of the Education System. This article will first pay attention to historical, educational and legal issues and then it will move onto an informed reading of some otficial documents. The article will conclude with an analysis of regional needs in education which stem from three áreas: the growing level of immigration, the actions which educational institutions are taking in the Región of Murcia and some estimates for the future in relation to Educational Compensation and Multicultural Education.
