Abstract

The aim of this article is to present the state of the question regarding the phenomenon of Islamophobia connected to women and veil in Spain. The article analyses the Islamophobia as a new phenomenon determined by the arrival of Muslim migrants or migrant from a Muslim background and by the specifi c role that women play in the construction of this Islamophobia. In order to achieve this objective, we focus on the analysis of the hiyab as the tangible symbol of the Islamic presence in the Spanish society and as the main element for constructing what has been called ‘gendered Islamophobia’.
