Improving the antioomycete capacity in vivo and in vitro of a formula containing a combination of antagonists of Phytophthora capsici Leonian
Abstract
Effectiveness was tested of a formulate containing the fungus Trichoderma harzianum and the bacterium Burkholderia cepacia to inhibit the growth of the pathogenic oomycete Phytophthora capsici, the causal agent of root rot in pepper. The antagonists were evaluated in dual confrontations in vitro. B. cepacia producing antibiosis and T. harzianum microparasitism and enzymatic lysis, while competing for space and nutrients. The formulate uses a base of vermiculite and oats, and the optimal doses were 3.5×108 spores/ml of T. harzianum and 109 CFU/ml of B. cepacia in a pH range of 3.5-5.6. Experiments were carried out at 23-30 °C. In vivo, the use of a combination B. cepacia+T. harzianum reduced by up to 84% the incidence of root rot in pepper plants, and can be considered an alternative to the use of chemical products.
