Guidelines for Authors
-
Only original and unpublished works will be published.
-
Works may be submitted in Spanish. If submitted in other languages, they must be accompanied by their corresponding translation into Spanish.
-
Works may fall within the following typologies: (A) Empirical and/or experimental in nature. (B) Theoretical speculation. (C) Structured, semi-structured, or open interviews. (D) Visual essays accompanied by a supporting text.
-
Outside of blind peer review, Revista Visceral will publish reviews submitted to us about books, catalogs, videographic or cinematographic works, events, exhibitions, etc. that can be consulted and viewed at least during the year of publication of the corresponding issue. The format will be free and authors are asked to accompany their review with an image.
According to types A, B, C, and D, the content of the works, as a reference, should be organized as follows:
A. Research articles: Title, keywords, abstract, title, keywords, and abstract. Introduction; Methodology used in the case of empirical research; Results if applicable; Conclusions; References ordered alphabetically; Image index.
B. Theoretical review articles: Title, keywords, abstract, title, keywords, and abstract. Presentation of the problem through an Introduction; Development of the topic-problem structuring said development into differentiated points as much as possible; Conclusions; References ordered alphabetically; Image index.
C. Interviews will be presented in Spanish transcriptions and organized according to the structure corresponding to their nature.
Title, keywords, abstract, title, keywords, and abstract.
Structured and semi-structured interviews: Presentation of the problem and context of the interviewees, methodology used to obtain and measure data, Results obtained and discussion. Bibliographic references. Image index.
For open interviews: Contextualization of the interviewee and their relevance for the purposes of the interview. Bibliographic references. Image index.
D. A Visual Research Article is equivalent to a written research article; the difference lies in the fact that its content, whether data, methodology, arguments, or conclusions, is fundamentally visual.
A Visual Research Article consists of a written part and a visual part. Words do not describe images; images are not mere illustrations of words.
As a general criterion, what is easier, more eloquent, and more accurate to say with words is said with words; and what is easier, more eloquent, and more accurate to say visually is shown or presented with visual images.
Typically, the written parts of an article consist of ten elements: (1) Title (in Spanish and English); (2) Abstract (in Spanish and English); (3) Keywords: (in Spanish and English); (4) Introduction, presentation, justification; (5) Objectives; (6) Methodology (denomination and justification); (7) Context (people and places); (8) Discussion; (9) Conclusions, and (10) References.
Typically in a Visual Research Article the following images are necessary: (1) Visual title; (2) Visual abstract (optional); (3) Key visual terms (optional); (4) Context (people and places); (5) Visual processes, findings, arguments, results, and interpretations; (6) Visual citations; and (7) Visual conclusions.
In general, the visual elements of a Visual Research Article are mandatory when using: Visual Methodologies, Visual Arts Based Research; and Artistic Research methodologies.
All types of visual images can be part of a Visual Research Article.
A Figure in a Visual Research Article may consist of a single image, or be a grouping of images: two images or visual pair, three or more images (descriptive series, narrative series, photo-essay, etc.)
Every Figure must have its image caption, clearly identifying its authorship, date, title, technique, medium, and location.
Examples of Visual Research Articles: (a) those dedicated to visual arts in the journal 'Journal for Artistic Research' (https://www.jar-online.net); (b) the visual essays of the journal Visceral.
Succinct verbal description of the visual elements of a Visual Research Article:
Visual Title. The visual title consists of an image of sufficient complexity and quality that defines both the topic and research methodology. The image must be an original work by or by one of the people involved in the research.
Visual Abstract (optional): Minimum 3 and maximum 5 images, normally small in size and grouped in a single figure, that summarize the research as a whole.
Key Visual Images (optional): Minimum 3 and maximum 5 images, normally small in size and grouped in a single figure, that situate our research in the contemporary artistic and research landscape.
Visual description and interpretation of context (people and places): The images necessary to account for the context of our research. For the purposes of a Visual Research Article, between two and three images.
Visual description, interpretation, and explanation of processes, findings, arguments, and results: The images necessary to account for our research. For the purposes of a Visual Research Article, between three and four images.
Visual Citations: All images that have already been published (books, journals, YouTube, Instagram, etc.) and that appear in our article are visual citations. Just as text citations are necessary in research articles, the same is true with visual citations. At least one visual citation is necessary in a Visual Research Article. Visual citations do not have to be independent images but, usually, are part of the group of images that make up the same Figure.
Visual Conclusions: The best visual images we have achieved as a result of our research. For the purposes of a Visual Research Article, between two and three images.
E. Opinion articles: Title, keywords, abstract, and abstract. Presentation of the problem through an Introduction; Development of the topic-problem structuring said development into differentiated points as much as possible; Conclusions; References ordered alphabetically; Image index.
Given the nature of research in the arts, these organizational points are for guidance only, as it is possible that both the topic and methodology of some artistic research may not conform to the structures of scientific research in social sciences. In the case where the essay or article has a different and/or experimental structure, it will be necessary to include a special section mentioning the methodology used, its absence, and its coherence with the topic being addressed.
In these cases, the editorial committee will study the relevance of the work presented and reserves the right to publish an editorial note if deemed appropriate.
- The recommended length for works A, B, C: from 4000 to 5000 words. Maximum length: 6000 words, not counting bibliographic references.
For visual essays, the minimum length will be 1000 words and the maximum text length will be 2000 words. Bibliographic references and image indexes with their technical data will be counted separately.
-
Ethical research standards that appear in the corresponding section in this same Journal must be respected.
-
Authors are responsible for the judgments and opinions expressed in articles and communications. In any case, Revista Visceral understands that the opinions expressed by the authors are their sole responsibility.
-
Revista Visceral is not responsible for possible conflicts arising from the authorship of works published in the Journal and understands, in all cases, that the authors of articles, interviews, visual essays, and reviews have the authorship and reproduction rights of the texts and images they have sent to the Journal for publication.
-
Authors must complete and sign the identification sheet and the originality and copyright transfer document. Once an article is accepted for publication, the author or authors transfer patrimonial rights, solely to promote the dissemination of the works, to the journal's editor.
-
Bibliographic references will appear within the text and never as footnotes. They will be ordered alphabetically at the end of the article, interview, or visual essay under the heading "References." All citations will conform to the standards of the American Psychological Association (APA) in its Publication Manual. https://www.ubu.es/sites/default/files/portal_page/files/guia_estilo_apa.pdf
For example:
[book]: Hernández Sampieri, R., Fernández Collado, C., & Baptista Lucio, P. (1998). Metodología de la investigación. Editorial Mc Graw Hill
[article]: Hernández, F. H. (2008). La investigación basada en las artes. Propuestas para repensar la investigación en educación. Educatio siglo XXI, 26, 85-118.
Textual citations within the body of the text, when shorter than 3 lines, should be in quotation marks; if three lines or more, it will be without quotation marks, with a left indent greater than that of the body text. In both cases it will be cited this way: surname, year of publication, and page(s) from which it was extracted, (Mills 1994, 25)
Work by two authors: (Denzin and Lincoln 2005). Work by more than two authors and fewer than six, on first appearance all are cited, in subsequent ones the first surname followed by the expression et al. in italics and the year. More than six authors, from the first time, the first author is cited and et al. In the bibliographic References all authors of all works must appear.
Notes that appear in the body of the text and do not refer to bibliographic references must appear as footnotes. Only in justified cases will they be placed at the end of the text, prior to the list of bibliographic references.
- Research articles, visual and theoretical review articles, interviews, and reviews must also respect the following formal criteria:
For the text of articles, interviews, and reviews: Times New Roman font, 12 points, single spacing, no indent, justified alignment, top and bottom margin 2.5 cm and lateral 3 cm (both).
For textual citations inserted in the text: Times New Roman font, 12, single spacing, and justified alignment for citations in the text that are separate (if more than 3 lines of citation).
For notes at the end of the document. Times New Roman font, 12, single spacing, no indent, justified alignment.

Images in all cases will be sent in a file separate from the text file. They will be numbered consecutively and must indicate in all cases their source. Example: Illustration 1. Author, Date of image. Source.
It remains at the discretion of Revista Visceral to layout the images in articles unless the author expressly indicates a specific order and determined position of images within the article. In this case, the author must submit three different files: a PDF version where images appear in the corresponding place in the text; another in Word with only the text; and another with the images with their corresponding technical and contextual data.
Body of text in research articles, interviews, and visual essays (introduction, objectives...). Number headings and sub-headings as follows:
Second level (lowercase bold, Times New Roman font, 12 points): 1.1.
Third level (lowercase normal, Times New Roman font, 12 points): 1.1.1.
MAIN (UPPERCASE BOLD, Times New Roman font, 12 points): 1.
Interviews must distinguish between interviewee and interviewer as follows:
Interviewee: Times New Roman font, 12 points in bold.
Interviewer: Times New Roman font, 12 points in normal text
– In research articles and essays, a section on conclusions should be attempted.
– In all cases, corresponding bibliographic references must be attached.
- Works published in Visceral are subject to the following terms regarding copyright and reproduction:

Supplementary Files
Supplementary files are those that contain information that enriches the work or facilitates its understanding, for example, audios, videos, tables, maps, images, etc. Images, tables, graphs, etc. contained in the text are not considered supplementary files; these must be included in the text in their appropriate location and size.
Supplementary files can be in the following formats:
Text: ASCII, Word, PDF, HTML Tables: Excel, Word, HTML, XHTML, XML Audio and video: AVI, MPG, Quicktime, RM, MP3, WAV Animation: GIF, JPEG, Flash/Shockwave Images: GIF, JPEG, TIFF
They will be uploaded to the platform during the submission process and named as supplementary files. As many as required can be uploaded.
Editorial Process of Submission
Upon arrival of a new submission, the editorial team will verify that it complies with the standards relating to style and content.
If the submission is accepted, it will move to the review stage where the editorial committee will select two expert researchers who will issue evaluation reports. These reports will include an opinion regarding the timeliness of the research, methodological adequacy, bibliographic review, and contribution to the area of knowledge, through the double-blind system. In case contradictory reports are issued, a third report will be requested. The reports will be tools for the editorial decision that will rest with the editorial committee, which will communicate to the author the editorial decision that may be: accepted, accepted with minor corrections, modifications (in this case the new submission will be subject to a new round of review), or rejected. In any case, the author may challenge the editorial decision and communicate with the editorial team to receive appropriate clarifications. It is the intention of the editorial committee to motivate the editorial decision and guide the author on the timeliness of their research.
A first editorial decision (acceptance or rejection) will be made in the first 3 months, and final acceptance will be made within 6 months of receipt. Always depending on the volume of submissions being managed at any given time.
