Eating habits, lifestyle, and sports practice among primary school students in Valladolid
Abstract
Overweight, obesity, and lack of physical exercise during childhood cause serious health problems both in childhood and adulthood. The objective of this study was to analyze the eating habits, lifestyle, and sports practice of Primary Education students in Valladolid (Spain). The Healthy Lifestyle Habits Questionnaire for Diet and Physical Activity (CHVSAAF) was used on 130 students aged 11-12 years. The statistical analysis to compare both groups revealed that more than 80% of the children are neither overweight nor obese, with a low consumption of ultra-processed foods and a high frequency of healthy eating behaviors such as drinking water and eating fruits and vegetables. Additionally, it was observed that sports practice is common outside of Physical Education classes. Correlations showed that higher fruit and vegetable consumption is associated with lower weight (p<0.05), while watching television for more than two hours a day is related to higher weight and greater consumption of ultra-processed foods (p<0.05). This study highlights the importance of promoting healthy habits from an early age and the crucial role of the family in developing these habits.
