Academic burnout and emotional exhaustion among university students: The role of physical exercise
Abstract
This study aimed at establishing a predictive model of emotional exhaustion based on the levels of burnout experienced by university students. A crucial factor with regard to this will be whether or not regular physical activity may contribute to lower those levels -and so contribute to their wellbeing. A total of 789 university students (Primary Education: 32.4%; Nursing: 67.6%) of both sexes (79.5% female), aged 20-51 years (M = 24.33; SD = 6.101) participated. An ex post facto retrospective single-group design was planned. The instruments used were the Maslach Burnout Inventory-Student Survey (MBI-SS) and the Emotional Exhaustion Scale (2005). Males scored higher on academic burnout while females scored higher on emotional exhaustion (p < 0.05). With regard to the degrees that these students were enrolled in, nursing students attained a higher rank in both scales (p < 0.05). In addition, the fact of practising physical activity and/or sport was a protective variable in the relationship between academic burnout and emotional exhaustion. These findings suggest the need to consider physical activity and/or sport as a tool for the prevention of emotional exhaustion and academic burnout.
