Abstract

At the beginning of the 21st Century two women were appointed as members of the Spanish Royal Academy: Historian Carmen Iglesias and the Molecular-Biologist Margarita Salas. Both had already been entrusted with important academic institutions and enjoyed high recognition and standing. The theme “Language” arose in their scientific work for differing reasons. For Margarita Salas it was terminology, which was brought about by her reflections on the Spanish language; for Carmen Iglesias it was the individual and societal responsibility of language use, and her efforts focused particularly on the 18th Century. In their Language Theory views they both present opposing positions, which leave their mark as rational universalism, or more precisely linguistic relativism.
